Thank you {and curse you!} apartment therapy for introducing me to Ruffled! Ruffled is the place where all the junk you 'favorited' {but didn't act quickly enough} in Etsy went--Mason jars, doilies, milk glass--that you can now claim! Although geared toward brides and other wedding participants, Ruffled has a ton of cool stuff that doesn't have to be used for nuptial-ness {?}.

i love polyvore to jumpstart the work week!
During my morning bloghopping, I clicked on an ad featured on desiretoinspire for 2Modern--a shopping site that has everything from home to baby goods, all super stylish. I spotted a link on the sidebar that read Style A Room, and I was intrigued. Oooooooh what fun! Check out what I created:

honing the wardrobe
Today's outfit is a perfect example of my true style and how I wish I dressed everyday. Why don't I dress the way I want to everyday, you ask?? The answer is simple: I don't know! I suppose laziness has a lot to do with it, but it could also be that my work environment is not conducive to arriving in my ideal ensembles.
I finally found the perfect {read: doesn't make me look butch} denim jacket and black knit maxi skirt!!!!! Both have been on my shopping list forever, so it was a beautiful day in the neighborhood when I got to check them off.

"everyone wanted to be judged"
Abby just e-mailed me this fantastic article on The Bumbys and I had to share it with all of you! Have you heard of them? I hadn't before reading this article, but I absolutely love what they are doing. I'll direct you here to the full article, so you can go read it now...then come back. ;)
I'm the type that loves to read and collect fortunes from my cookies--keeping only the really good ones--and to have my fortune told. I have always been interested in astrology, Pagan practices, etc., but what The Bumbys are doing is more literal. In short, they assess individuals as they stand before them, and give what they call A Fair and Honest Appraisal of Your Appearance. Along with a detailed, typed {yes, like on a typewriter-typed} appraisal, individuals are given a rating on a scale of 1 to 10. What I love most is Mr. Bumby's outlook:

true to style
As much as I would like to think I would be satisfied with an all black-and-white-and-denim wardrobe, wearing simply jeans and a tee everyday, I am all too often reminded of how impractical that is. Then I come across some gorgeous piece like this maxi dress, and I am grateful I didn't chuck all the pretty pieces I own!
Like any chick, I get in these crazy moods, but in my {oh-so-mature, ha!} adult years I have learned some discipline when it comes to acting impulsively. One thing I do, when I think I am over an article of clothing in my wardrobe, is take it out of my main closet and hang it in my spare closet. Usually I forget about it after a while, which is good, because when I come across it, I can more objectively evaluate whether or not I love it enough to keep it. I often throw clothing I'm on the fence about in a giant bag in my spare closet, and sometimes even sift through it looking for something to wear. I guess to give it one more go...which is how a certain sherbet orange-and-magenta peasant skirt keeps making its way back in to my main closet.
Back to the gorgeous maxi. When I spotted it this morning on ModCloth, a super cute site that features a whole host of new items every day, I quickly dreamed up this ensemble:
A worn denim jacket has been on my list for some time now, but I just can't find one with the right fit yet. The ones I have tried make me feel so butch...not a very sexy feeling. I threw in the Marc Jacobs Daisy fragrance because it is my favorite accessory. Not only is the bottle so beautiful perched on my vanity, but it smells divine. Abby turned me on to it, then I turned little sister on to it.
Full disclosure: knowing me, I would take that bracelet off and throw my hair up in a ponytail halfway through the day, but at least I could spend part of the day looking all put-together. ;) Now I just have to learn how to do that fishtail braid to my hair...

Happy New Year!!
I am currently LOVING Florence Welch and her band Florence + The Machine! I've been listening to Drumming Song nonstop for days and it still moves me.
She is such a powerful force. Talented. Gorgeous. And a Virgo!
My next resolution on the list: get legs like hers! ;) She represents us pale girls well.
Happy 2011, friends! Let's make this year even more AMAZING than last year.
{photo source: fanpop} Go out right now and buy her album LUNGS. It will rock your world. Promise.

gift ideas for the Virgos in your life
Mrs. Lilien put together quite the attractive collection for Virgos back in September, our birth month, but it can be adapted for this holiday season.
A sophisticated agenda or journal is a must, and you couldn't go wrong with any one of these other items. I can guarantee that all the Virgos in your life love them some blue, especially the deep blue in that Catherine Malandrino dress; so if you combined, say, that blue + a journal, well you'd be golden my friend! What? You don't have any Virgo friends or family? Then you need to get yourself a virgo!
Don't just take my word for it. Mrs. Lilien said it best:

anthropologie holiday contest
That was fun!!
Anthropologie posted a contest on facebook encouraging fans to use Polyvore to create and enter a day or evening holiday look. How could I pass that up? The answer is I couldn't. In fact, it is so addicting, you may see several more of my creations that I will surely post on my blog. Be warned. Or be excited! ;)
Has anyone else participated? Please let me know because I would love to see your masterpieces!
P.S. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get rid of the excess around each item when arranging the pieces, so that explains the ugly pixelated gray areas. Meh.

VS fashion show!
Every year I look forward to it. Every year. Now only a week has passed since the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in NYC aired, and I am already excited to see what the production team and designers cook up for next year's show!
This year, Katy Perry and Akon were the musical performers, and I especially enjoyed Katy Perry's acts. I am not a huge fan of hers, but I liked her outfits and her voice sounded good live. I never realized how pretty she is. She reminds me of a friend I went to high school with in the face quite a bit. Hi Ash! And Akon seemed to enjoy the models flocking around him on the stage. He enjoyed it a little too much, maybe. Anyone catch what I'm throwin'? Maybe I am misreading what I saw, but perhaps dude should have buttoned his jacket when he finished singing. Moving on...
My favorite outfit of the show was Behati Prinsloo's PINK number.
Other favorites from this show were also from the PINK segment.
Jessica Stam is tops. She is one of my favorite models of all time. Some women know female athletes' names; I know models. I always notice her, in VS shows, J.Crew catalogs, Anna Sui and DKNY ads, you name it. So I was giddy when I saw her walk out on to the VS runway this year.
I've been noticing Lily Aldridge since she began modeling for J.Crew. And now the lucky gal is engaged to hottie Caleb Followill of Kings of Leon. The model + the rockstar. Gabriel used to joke that that's what we are. Well, I no longer model, and he is still a musician, but does not have goals of reaching rockstar status. 'Good thing too! Because he's ten times hotter than Caleb, and I would have to go barbaric on some swooning broads. But I digress.
The only times I miss runway modeling are when I watch the VS Fashion Shows, then I am brought back to reality when I think of how much I love carbs. That's not to say if I suddenly woke up five or six inches taller one morning that I wouldn't run out and get an agent to help me land a spot in next year's show! A secret dream of mine...
Adriana Lima looked amazing with her fit post-baby bod, but I was underwhelmed by Alessandra Ambrosio's outfits. It seems she got stiffed this year, and much better getups were reserved for the newbies. And I missed Miranda Kerr's bubbly personality as she is out prego. But, hopefully she'll hit up Adriana for some get-fit tips and be back in the show next year.
The workmanship definitely shows in the clothes, the choreography, and the overall production, and I have such immense respect for everyone involved. That world is no doubt chaotic, but it is also enthralling! And now I must go plan my night around hot Bikram yoga and eating only vegetables for dinner, because, well, seeing those models look so good is motivating!

his + hers challenge
Alli over at hooray challenged her readers {me!} to join in on a little series she and her friend at pure and noble just started, called his + hers. I have accepted the challenge and am providing my take on the topic.
Movie character wardrobe lust:
hers - I absolutely love Cameron Diaz's wardrobe in The Holiday, where she plays Amanda Woods. Her clothing is impeccably tailored and all her coats are so sophisticated and cozy-looking. The woman even makes pajamas look stylish.
There you have it. If I had put together this post a decade ago, you would be seeing a full-on spread of every one of Alicia Silverstone's outfits in Clueless. I still sort of love sweater vests. And argyle. And knee socks.
Play along, won't you? And send me your links!
What a wonderful way to start off the week...

muddy sports are the best
Tonight is the first playoff game for my ol' high school's varsity football team. They are currently undefeated this season {10-0} and I haven't been to a game in nine years, so imma goin'!
It's about to seriously storm...any. minute. now...in the capital city, so I will have to locate my umbrella before Gabe and I head out to the game.
I'm wishing I owned this beauty right about now:

reconnecting with my city
Although I love daydreaming of living in far away lands, spending weekends in nearby destination spots, and every book I have read as of late is about traveling, I really enjoyed staying locally this weekend.
Friday kicked off with dinner at home with our friend Abby, which was a delight. She just returned from a quick trip to NYC and brought us back some goodies from Mario Batali's Eataly! We stayed up til after midnight gabbing and drinking wine, while Gabe kept the fire stoked and nodded off a few times... ;)
Saturday started with a baby shower for our friend Jill, who is due with her first baby {a girl!} in February. The party went by pretty quickly, but there were good people, good food, great gifts, pink everywhere, and entertaining kids. I was really bad and ate both a slice of super chocolaty cake and a strawberry cupcake. Oink.
After I returned home from the shower, since it was still early in the day and I was all cute and stuff, I asked Gabe if he would like to go see a movie. While he showered and got ready, I browsed the in-theaters titles and found nothing of interest. Plan B. We decided instead to park in the hub of downtown and take part in Sacramento's Second Saturday festivities on foot. So fun! And, while Gabe was putting together his outfit, he said to me, and I quote, "I can wear my Jack Tack!" He too loves EmersonMade. So, we both wore a Jack Tack. Prepare to gag from cuteness:
We also scored a ton of CDs from this seriously bad-ass new music store. Musician hubby even thought it was bad-ass, so you know it's good. Yes, we still buy CDs; no I don't think they're old school. Gabe was thrilled to find Nick Drake, and also picked up Cream, Sonic Youth, and Tom Waits. I got The Helio Sequence, The Black Keys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and two Grant-Lee Phillips albums.
The guys running the place were totally cool {a refreshing change from the depressed emo clichés found in most other stores around downtown}, and thanked us a bunch for checking out their store. Dude even gave us a muslin tote for our goods! We'd picked up a flyer for this store a couple weeks ago at a downtown cafe and then kinda forgot about it until we walked by--and we're so glad we stopped in. If you are local, you have to check out this place. They told us they get new stuff in all the time, so we're planning a budget to see when we get to go back...their prices are awesome...we just go a little nuts in music stores.
All this shopping made us hungry, so we discussed our options. We wanted to be able to walk to a restaurant, since it was only seven o'clock and the weather was so nice, and wouldn't you know it, before crossing the street from the crowded rainbow district corner, we were handed a booklet by a woman wearing a large sign. She told us the booklet specifies great vegetarian/vegan restaurants in and around the city. Amazing. She was like our vegan fairy! We talked to her for a bit, about how we had just adopted a plant-based diet only a month ago, and she encouraged us to check out the Vegetarian Meetup Group because they have a great forum and do monthly events like potlucks and movie screenings. I already had joined Sac's Vegan Meetup, but her group seemed better connected, so I will have to check it out.
We crossed a few blocks, rounded a few corners, and made our way to Zócalo restaurant. The place was so alive with a live band playing right inside the entrance, people seated at every table and swarming the giant bar, so we initially thought there was no way we were getting a table. Wrong. We were sat immediately and served quickly.
I love this place. The food is so delicious {consistently!}, the service is awesome, the decor and lighting are very warm and inviting, and it's just an overall hoppin' place. We ordered a couple of beers and the guacamole to start. Our server also brought us their housemade trio of salsas and beans with chips.
For dinner, we ordered what I thought was their only vegan dish besides the guac: a vegetarian burrito without cheese or sour cream. {Note: as I am typing this and linking the restaurant's website, I found this article; good to know for next time!} Since we were splitting the burrito, the kitchen had sliced it on the bias and placed each half in separate bowls, with fresh pureed salsa pooling at the base of the bowls.
It also came with cilantro rice and black beans that we added to our burrito bowls, and heaped the remaining guac on top. Seriously yummy. Our table was located right next to the bar, so we were surrounded by large groups of friends meeting up, and even ran in to a few friends of our own. We had clearly picked the right place to dine that night.
We were thankful for the long walk back to our truck after dinner. The weather was still nice, albeit a bit chillier, and on the way there was still music playing at open-door shops and shoppers shopping on every street. Second Saturday in Sacramento sees police officers strolling and chatting in small groups with coffee cups in hand, dogs {we saw a husky!} on walks with their masters, teenagers being loud and obnoxious in equally loud clothing + hairstyles, the smell of mj wafting through the air, music, food, and art...We need to go more often. There's no excuse for not going. It's free. It's local. It's fantastic.
Luckily we have a five disk CD player at home, because we couldn't decide which album to play first. Since I loaded the player, I got to choose. The Helio Sequence. Blasting.
Gabe made a fire in the fireplace and we both passed out in the living room next to it and the furry children.
It's fun to go out, but it is always nice to come home.
We were the typical married couple on Sunday: Gabe cleaned out the garage and emptied the pool while I lazed around the house, only getting around to washing one load of laundry, cleaning the kitchen, and surfing the web. Leftovers for lunch and dinner.
And now it's the start of the work week. Happy Monday, friends! How was your weekend spent?

Would you? Have you?
I'm not sure about these boots, but something about them keeps catching my attention. Maybe because they're glossy? Or maybe just because they are rain boots, which I have natural fondness for...
I have come across these boots twice in the last day and a half, not even shopping for shoes, so part of me wants to think it is a sign, but the other part of me can't get over how silly they look. I've got two pairs of galoshes, one from early on in high school before they were fashionable, and one I wear at work if need be. So, I am not looking to add another pair.
What do you think? Would you rock these, or have you already?

It's technically still my birthday month.
So, I'm sharing with you a very special gift I received from a very special friend.
Thank you, Abby! I'm busy planning outfits around my little carnation now. :)
Love. EmersonMade. You should too.

RUE: clever. all encompassing. not at all amateurish.
RUE mag is up and running as of today, and it does not disappoint. I am only roughly half-way through the issue, but I am too impatient to wait 'til I am finished reading it to share with all of you! Sometimes the procrastinator-Virgo takes on the extreme other end of the spectrum persona and introduces impatient-Virgo.
Some of my faves so far:
p. 85 Victoria Smith's place. Victoria, you took the words right out of my mouth and your home is breathtaking. In her own words, Victoria admits:
"I fake it 'til I make it;"
"I'm pretty much a homebody with a social side;" and
"I think I missed my era, so I like surrounding myself with bits of the past."
I can relate to all of the above. For example, I fake it with an IKEA Docksta table in my formal living room, until I can afford the coveted Eero Saarinen tulip table. And like Victoria, Gabe & I agree we missed our era, which was late 50s - mid 70s, so we dot our home and wardrobes with retro vintage pieces reminiscent of the bygone era, which, mixed in with true antique pieces makes for a very pleasing and interesting aesthetic in our home. If I do say so myself.
p. 138 It's Emily! As in Emily Henderson of The Brass Petal and HGTV's 2010 Design Star. Yeah, that Emily. In this story, Emily got to live out her dream party with the help of the Rue team and some close personal friends. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at the party. So cute.
Check out the premiere issue for yourself & discuss. :) Much love goes out to this very talented team! I'm really looking forward to future issues, and, well, finishing this issue.

next weekend, i will have a new SIL ... {WEDding WEDnesday}
That's right, my little brother is getting married. To my best friend from high school.
Life is funny, and rewarding, that way. Their relationship is young, but their chemistry is undeniable, and I could not be happier with whom my little bro chose to spend {and make us spend} the rest of his life. And if he thinks she and I are crazy when we're together now...just wait til we're related.
Anyhow, Sarah, my brother's bride, actually inspired today's WEDding WEDnesday post. She left me a voice mail the other day asking what I used for the money dance at our reception, in terms of a pouch or bag. First, let me say that I was not always on board for having a money dance, but our DJ eventually convinced us to go for it and call it a honeymoon dance. That tasted better going down. Mom was thrilled we were having one, and in the end Gabe and I were too. Not only did it allow us a chance to dance with several of our guests with whom we would normally not get the opportunity to dance, but we made a healthy chunk of moola! I won't divulge the dollar amount, but in case you are curious, let's just say we could have bought this, this, these, this {in both colors}, and these, and still had change leftover for a couple of coffees. So, having the lovely experience that we did, I reassured Sarah of the benefits of having a money honeymoon dance.
While the pouch definitely came in handy, keep in mind not everyone will want to follow suit, and you'll have bills sticking out of your cleavage throughout the dance...good times.
And Sarah, if you are reading this, I used an Anthropologie muslin drawstring bag. You know, the one in which the sales associates roll up and stuff your receipt? Yeah, that one. Free & effective. Simple as that. I could make you a custom pouch, lickity-split! You just say the word and I will bust out the ol' sewing machine. :)
